How does it work?

Phase 1 establishes the baseline for a course by focusing on the core module specification alignment, legal and ethical compliance, and academic standards. Guided by the Programme Leader (PL), this structural phase begins with appointing and onboarding a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to guarantee a sustainable foundation of academic rigour. Key operational steps involve a descriptor audit, strategic folder configuration, and drafting the initial module descriptor. Following a thorough internal peer review for alignment checks, the phase concludes with a final sign-off. This completes Quality Gate 1, yielding an Approved Descriptor strictly owned by the Programme Leader.

Managed under the oversight of the Learning Designer (LD), Phase 2 transitions the approved text specifications into tactical curriculum architectures by managing structure, sequencing, and overall resource planning. The primary ingestion workflow involves uploading the institutional module descriptor into FutureLearn’s innovative platform, where automated system mapping checks run to map match files into structural frameworks. Once mapped, teams execute an intensive blueprint review, populate the foundational blueprint metrics, and conduct a cross-functional peer review to verify overall structural feasibility. Upon finalising the framework, the project passes Quality Gate 2, establishing the Master Blueprint under the ownership of the Learning Designer.

Phase 3 concentrates on the granular narrative flow, learner engagement strategies, and initial asset planning to map out the literal, lesson-by-lesson components of the user experience. Operating under the storyboard-first workflow, the Learning Designer collaborates with the SME and Content Developer (CD) to build out the technical storyboard script. The draft undergoes technical validation alongside intensive content and tone reviews to refine long text sections, simplify concepts, and select key formatting styles. Following a comprehensive visual/UX review and a collaborative design consolidation meeting, the copy is finalised. This satisfies Quality Gate 3, establishing the Final Storyboard overseen by the Learning Designer.

Phase 4 handles rapid development, asset integrity, and software functionality, turning the approved narrative scripts into interactive digital materials. The Content Developer leads the build phase by establishing a direct, 1:1 mapping of the storyboard context into structured HTML code layouts. During this production step, teams add and optimise rich media assets, embed supporting instructional videos, and inject functional, complex components such as accordions or multi-format knowledge checks. The finalised, built environment is then fully exported using an LTI, satisfying Quality Gate 4 and establishing a Module Build that is officially designated as 'QA Ready’ under the Content Developer's ownership.

Phase 5 executes an exhaustive series of compliance verifications to guarantee content accuracy, usability, accessibility, and stakeholder sign-off. The module build undergoes rigid checks assessing layout structure, graphics, link integrity, tone, and the alignment of active knowledge check questions. Dedicated focus is applied to automated digital standards ensuring the platform is compliant with WCAG accessibility principles, diversity metrics, and hardware technical validation. Once assessment alignment is verified, the Final Quality Gate concludes with a final stakeholder review and sign-off, officially releasing a deployment-ready online module approved by the Programme Leader.

The workflow establishes an active, ongoing circle of continuous evaluation that extends well beyond initial course deployment. Once live, learners interact with the online material, the platform gathers precise learner analytics and qualitative user feedback to track operational performance and real-world student behaviours. This data feeds into routine performance reviews to extract actionable learning insights and design concrete improvement plans. Depending on the scope of the required modifications, maintenance loops route into minor fixes executed via swift patch releases, or cycle back entirely into Phase 2 or 3 for major enhancements and deeper modular regeneration.
