Additional information

To be eligible for this degree, you’ll need one of a Level 5 qualification, such as a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) in a closely related discipline. A Level 5 is the equivalent of the first two years of a three-year bachelor's degree.

If you’re an international student or English is not your first language, you’ll need to need to demonstrate English language skills equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each component. You can do so with one of the following accepted tests:
  • UKVI approved IELTS (Academic)
  • Non-UKVI approved IELTS
  • Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE) – B2 and C1 tests
  • Pearson’s PTE Academic
  • PTE Academic UKVI
  • LanguageCert International ESOL SELT
  • TOEFL iBT
  • WAEC grades A1 to C6
  • NECO grades A1 to C5
  • SPM grades A to C
  • Kenya High School Certificate Grade C+ or Higher
  • Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education grades 1 to 6
  • Uganda Certificate of Education grades 1 to 6

You’ll learn through a combination of pre-recorded lectures, online seminars, and practical sessions, all designed to offer maximum flexibility.

Your self-directed study time will be spent reviewing content, preparing coursework, working on projects, and revising for assessments.

Lectures introduce key theories and concepts, while seminars encourage interactive learning and discussion.

You’ll be assessed through a mix of exams, coursework, and project-based tasks. Depending on the module, this may include written assignments, practical work, or verbal and poster presentations.

Mechanical engineers are in demand across industries, from aerospace and automotive to energy, manufacturing, and medical devices. This top-up degree gives you the technical knowledge and practical skills to step into a wide range of engineering roles, or continue your studies at a postgraduate level. Some roles you’ll be ready for include:
  • Design Engineer
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Maintenance Engineer
  • CAD Technician
  • Project Engineer
  • Production Manager
  • Engineering Consultant

Modules

Master the tools that power modern engineering design. On this module, you’ll use commercial software to simulate complex systems, learning how to apply finite element analysis (FEA), mesh models, and boundary conditions to solve detailed engineering problems.

Explore how materials behave under real-world stresses. Building on core principles, this module tackles topics such as stress concentrations, torsion, inelastic deformation, and failure theory, giving you the skills to analyse and design structural components with confidence.

High-quality, reliable products don’t happen by chance. This module introduces you to quality systems, statistical methods, and reliability tools used in industry, helping you evaluate performance, reduce risk, and support continuous improvement.

As the fourth industrial revolution meets the demands of a circular economy, this module explores how digital innovation and sustainability intersect. You’ll examine technologies like AI, IIoT, and smart systems while addressing pressing challenges in energy, transport, manufacturing, and food systems.

Take ownership of your learning with an extended investigation into a topic of your choice. Whether you focus on research or design, you’ll build critical skills in independent study, technical writing, and communication, culminating in a professional report and presentation.
